Regional Minister (Ministry) and Team Leader

Ernie oversees all aspects of ministry within the YBA and has particular responsibility for the Ministry Group. This involves dealing with initial enquiries, interviewing candidates and offering apporpriate support for newly accredited ministers (NAM's) within the Baptist Union. A system of Peer Supervision for ministers is now successfully in place, and currently Ernie is working on a Care Covenant for ministers. Ernie is also responsible for ministerial settlements, working closely with and advising churches during pastoral vacancies, and attending the monthly National Settlement Team meetings at Didcot. Ernie also has responsibility for the pastoral care of ministers and their families within the YBA; this includes a number of retired ministers who reside within the region.

Ordained in 1974, Ernie was minister firstly of Westgate Baptist Church in Bradford and then, in 1986, moved to the post of tutor at Northern Baptist College, later combining that post with the role of group minister in the South West Manchester group of churches (Baptist and United Reformed). He was appointed as General Superintendent of the North Eastern Area of BUGB in 1998 and has been Regional Minister in the YBA since 2002.

Ernie has a particular interest in 'conflict transformation' and has attended courses offered by the Mennonites in both Great Britain and the USA. He co-authored a BUGB publication on this subject and is regularly involved in workshops to promote greater understanding of the issue, particularly seeking to assist ministers and churches in positive handling of conflict situations and learning to 'live together in love'.

Strongly committed to ecumenism, Ernie represents Yorkshire Baptists on the West Yorkshire Ecumenical Council and will take up the role of chair of WYEC in 2008.

As Team Leader within the YBA at the present time, Ernie works closely with all team members as they work to serve the Lord and His church here in Yorkshire.
