THE third in the YBA’s series of Lenten reflections on how we meet Jesus in our daily lives is by Ann Liston, of Hope Baptist Church, Hebden Bridge.
"The last eighteen months have been challenging for our church. We’ve had problems with a newly redecorated ceiling, extensive damage from flooding, a ministerial inter-regnum and litigation proceedings against our former architect. Sometimes, we’re left asking why? Why is this happening, when we’re trying to tell the people of Hebden Bridge how much God loves them?
"But, I do meet Jesus in these difficult circumstances – in the generosity of the pub owner, who provided us with a room so we could meet on Sunday morning, in the kindness of the three young women, unconnected to the church, who spent two days lifting the carpets and mopping out our sanctuary, in the messages of support, cake and financial gifts, in the amazing support we received from Baptist Insurance. Jesus sometimes appears in the least expected places.
"Especially, I meet with Jesus through the other members of our church family. This is a congregation that does not give up – the commitment and courage of John Fawcett is in our DNA.
"We believe that we have been given a prophecy at Hope “The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house, says the Lord Almighty” and in this place, I will grant peace.” (Haggai 2 v 9). But the words that precede this passage are also significant - “Be strong …. and work. For I am with you, declares the Lord Almighty”. That’s where I meet with Jesus."
