A celebration in words and music

Friends at Shipley Baptist Church celebrated their New Year with a new Scripture and a new song during their Covenant Sunday service.

They recited the church Covenant and received specially-made bookmarks bearing the Covenant and the Scripture for the year, Romans 10 verse 14 which reads: "How are they to call on one in whom they have believed? And how are they to believe in one whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him?"

Singer/songwriter John Froud, who is a deacon at the church, premiered his new song "Live Out the Gospel" based on the text from Romans - and it proved an instant hit with the congregation

They also sang a song based on the church's 2021 Scripture "The light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot overcome it" (John 1 v 5) - and as part of their prayers, John's setting to music of the church's midday prayer - "You Don't Change".

Commenting on this event, Keith Jones, part of the leadership team at Shipley, said "The church members and congregation really value having a text for the year and we are always delighted when John accepts a commission to put the text into a song. John's on-going ministry through the Zephaniah Trust, continues, with the Zephaniah Team, to bring light into dark places in many schools in the City of Bradford and the Spen Valley."
