An encouragement to set time aside from retired Baptist Minister, Andy Sellers
Hawkshead Hill Baptist Church - The Upper Room
This is a real gem that I discovered when I was training for Baptist ministry at Northern College. A fellow student encouraged us to check it out - and I’ve been visiting and staying for a few nights in The Upper Room at least once a year for the past fifteen years.
There is a warm welcome from Matt Hirst, the current minister, and his wife Ali, who are always on hand. It is a place I’ve visited for a variety of reasons. Just to go and enjoy the quietness, the near-by beauty of Tarn Hows or to tackle the fells of Coniston Old Man and beyond is ok. I’ve always found it to be a place where I’ve relished the surroundings but also a place of encounter. I’ve known time and again the presence of God bringing clarity, refreshment and renewed sense of purpose. It’s true that I don’t have to travel to Hawkshead Hill to find those things … but I have found it to be a place to which I can withdraw and be still and know ... The garden room is a splendid spot to read and write; the poustinia a quiet prayer space; the outdoor baptistry is available! There is emptiness, time slows down and there are few distractions.
To get in touch for more details just drop Ali an email. All the information is on the church website www.hawksheadhillbaptistchurch.org.uk. If you’d like to drop me a line to find out more, you’re very welcome adsellers@hotmail.co.uk.
Spending time at The Upper Room can be a great benefit in many ways. Among these is an insight into another expression of church in a challenging location. Whether or not you visit Hawkshead Hill, I encourage you to pray for the church and its ministry to the surrounding communities - and to the large number of folk who just drop in as they wander in this beautiful part of The Lakes.
The peaceful Garden Room.
